Read our AI Policy:

Acceptable and Unacceptable Use of Generative AI

The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT is permitted in this submission for some purposes, described below, and not for others. Whether to use GenAI tools is a decision that impacts the quality of your critical thinking and professional growth. For a review of pros and cons to using GenAI tools, and strategies for using them successfully in an academic environment, read this tutorialLinks to an external site. developed by Jefferson’s Student Writing Center.

You may use GenAI tools to help find information on a topic. However, you should be aware of the potential for inaccurate information, incomplete information, biased information, and use of information by GenAI without authorization (plagiarism). If you include content (ideas and information) that was generated, in whole or in part, by GenAI tools in work submitted for Inside Out, you must identify, confirm, and credit a human-authored source for that information (i.e., a journal article) and explicitly declare your usage of the GenAI tool if it helped you find that source. Failure to include appropriate citations constitutes plagiarism and is a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy.

The use of GenAI tools is permitted in submission to Inside Out for the following activities:

  • Searches for information on a topic
  • Checking grammar and style

The use of GenAI tools is not permitted the following activities:

  • Generating a draft of a writing submission.
  • Writing entire sentences, paragraphs or papers to complete submission.
  • Creating art or designs to be submitted
  • Exceptions may be allowed for artistic statements on AI that integrate it into the submission at the discretion of the editorial board; please contact Kirsten Bowen, Humanities Program Coordinator, at Kirsten.bowen@jefferson.edu if you plan to submit a piece that integrates AI to initiate a review process.

Any submission that is found to have used generative AI tools in unauthorized ways will not be accepted, and you will be barred from future submission. When in doubt about permitted usage, please ask for clarification.
